Short cv

Dr. Kostas Paloukis holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Crete. He is a lecturer at the International Hellenic University, where he teaches Contemporary Greek and European History and Archival Science at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies. In addition, he serves as Head of the Historical Archive of ThPA S.A., overseeing archival preservation, research initiatives, and the creation of a digital platform (2018–2023) that presents historical documentation about the Port of Thessaloniki. He has also worked as an academic associate with the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen, and Merchants (GSEVEE). His research and teaching focus on the history of the communist and labour movements, the history of ports and port workers, and the evolution of small and medium-sized enterprises in modern Greece.

Dr. Paloukis has authored two books. His first, Contemporary History of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen, and Merchants (GSEVEE) 1997–2018, published in 2020, examines the organization’s transition into the 21st century and outlines the modern identity of Greece’s largest trade union representing small entrepreneurs. His second book, The Archeiomarxists: The Other Communists of the Interwar Period, also published in 2020 and based on his doctoral dissertation, reconstructs the history of the main Trotskyist current in Greece, the broader communist and labour movements, and the social dynamics of Greek society during the interwar years, drawing inspiration from E. P. Thompson’s historical approach.

Beyond his books, Dr. Paloukis has contributed to numerous collective volumes and journals in Greece and abroad. In 2019, he participated in a volume on the interwar history of the Peristeri neighbourhood in Athens. In 2021, he published the article “Marking the Political, Cultural and Spatial Boundary Lines of the Working Class in the Interwar Period: The Neighbourhood of Peristeri, Athens” in the edited volume Labour History in the Semi-Periphery by Leda Papastefanaki and Nikos Potamianos, where he examined marginalized social classes and class polarization in Athens. That same year, he wrote the article “Moral Economy and Moral Unionism: Trade Union Practices among Salaried Artisans (Early 20th Century–Interwar)” in Versions of the Moral Economy: Historical and Theoretical Studies, edited by Nikos Potamianos, where he introduced the concept of “moral unionism” as a form of guild culture expression within the moral economy of early labour unionism. In 2023, he contributed an extensive preface to the reprint of Kostas Apekas’ book The True History of the Church (1821–1853), a censored Marxist study from the interwar period, situating it within the anti-clerical agenda of the Greek Left and the ideological climate of the 1930s.
